Aiming for market introduction by 2026, the collaboration will combine their respective technologies and expertise to create a system suitable for both new and existing buildings. This year, they will conduct demonstration tests to evaluate the light transmittance and power generation capacity of photovoltaic glass, which will inform their future development plans and business scope.
The BIPV system being jointly developed includes two types: an “interior window type” for both existing and new buildings, and a “spandrel integrated type” for curtain wall construction in new buildings. YKK AP will focus on developing building materials with integrated solar power generation functions, such as curtain walls and windows, while Kandenko will handle the system development, including installation techniques and electrical materials. Both companies will work together on market expansion and maintenance considerations. They plan to collaborate with various solar cell manufacturers rather than limiting themselves to a single provider.
At a press conference held in Tokyo on May 24th, YKK AP President Akira Uozu expressed excitement about the venture, stating, “We are thrilled about the broadening scope of our business.” Kandenko President Toshio Nakama added, “We aim for the earliest possible social implementation and will thoroughly consider and propose methods to fully leverage the features of BIPV.” They envision a “local production for local consumption” power generation model, which promises minimal transmission losses, superior economic efficiency, and stability.
